Microcosms of Adjara – A Nature Filmmaking Workshop

filmmaking workshop by Ramaz Melashvilli

As part of the CineDoc Film Summer Camp 2024, this collaborative visual expedition brought together young aspiring students, a biologist, and a filmmaker to explore the rich biodiversity of Georgia’s Adjara region.
Led by biologist Mariam Bedukadze and filmmaker Ramaz Melashvili, the workshop introduced students to the fundamentals of nature filmmaking — from ecological observation to storytelling through the lens. Together, we investigated the microhabitats of Adjara, uncovering the intricate ecosystems that exist beneath our feet and beyond the visible surface.
The program combined hands-on fieldwork, scientific insight, and creative practice. Students learned how to film insects, fungi, amphibians, and forest textures using macro techniques, while also gaining experience in editing and constructing short-form documentaries.
The result is a short film co-created with the students — a visual reflection on the often-overlooked worlds within nature, and an invitation to look closer at the living systems that sustain us.
